Daddy

And I will be a father to you, and you shall be sons and daughters to me, says the Lord Almighty.” (2 Corinthians 6:18 NIV)

When I was five years old, my dad left our Christian home. For the next ten years I grew up with a gnawing sense of need to have the things that only a dad could give me. I watched my friends and their wonderful dads interact; all the time wishing that my situation was different. My heart yearned for a dad who would take care of me, talk with me, and walk me down the aisle when I got married. The things dad’s were supposed to be there to do. Mostly, I wanted a father who would love me in the same way I saw other fathers loved their daughters.

But God says that He is my father and I am his daughter. That isn’t just some abstract title which He uses figuratively. He has adopted me into his family and he will fulfill all my needs as my heavenly father.

When I remember how He is the savior of the world, yet He loves me as his special daughter, any feelings of longing for that father figure in my life disappear. I have God as my dad. What more could I need? Anyone else will fail me eventually.

My earthly dad missed most of the important events in my life. God will never fail me. My heavenly dad was there for each and every one of those special moments, and He saw them thousands of years before they happened.  He is the perfect comforter. He is there with me when I cry; His face fills with joy when I laugh. I am His little girl and that is where I find my identity.

You are God’s beautiful and beloved child. Realize how much you are worth to your Heavenly Father. He gave his only son so that you could join the family! Now that you know you have someone who will never fail you, give Him the love He deserves.

Pink Promises

“I am sure that nothing can separate us from God’s love–not life or death, not angels or spirits, not the present or the future…” (Romans 8:38 CEV)

After my father died, my sister and I helped Mom go through his personal items. I couldn’t wait to get into Daddy’s special drawer. It was the one drawer in his nightstand that he didn’t allow anyone to bother. He could hear you opening it from a mile away. I remember as a kid trying to quietly ease open the drawer in order to sneak some quarters from his big bowl of change (I wanted to feed the Pac Man game at the local arcade.) As I started to reach my hand inside, I heard Dad’s voice, “Michelle Leigh Medlock—get out of my drawer!” He didn’t mind giving me money for Pac Man—he just didn’t want me in his special, private drawer.

For years, I’d wondered what could possibly be in that forbidden treasure trove. Why was he so protective of it? Now was my chance to find out. As I searched through Daddy’s things, I found very ordinary items. His comb. Fingernail clippers. His money clip. Pictures of the family. Lots of change. His special calculator he used in business. And a lock box. When we opened the lock box—we found important documents like his and my mother’s marriage license, our birth certificates and the hospital bracelets for all three of us kids. Two tiny pink ones and one small blue one. The wording had yellowed over the years, but I could still read “Medlock Girl” and my birth date on the little bracelet. I held that tiny pink bracelet close to my heart for what seemed like hours.

It was at that moment I realized how very much my Daddy cherished me. He loved me so much that he even treasured my baby bracelet. Today, I keep that baby bracelet in a secret compartment of my purse as a reminder of how much my Daddy loved me.

You may not have a loving earthly father. Or, maybe you don’t even know your father, but I have good news. You have a heavenly father who treasures you, and He has little pink bracelets—His promises of love—all throughout His Word. Every time you find one like, Jeremiah 31:3 that says, “I have loved you with an everlasting love,” you’ll want to hold it close to your heart–just like I did. Spend some time discovering how much your Heavenly Father loves you today. It’ll change your life.

LITTLE GIRL FOURTEEN FLIPPING THROUGH A MAGAZINE
SAYS SHE WANTS TO LOOK THAT WAY
BUT HER HAIR ISN’T STRAIGHT HER BODY ISN’T FAKE
AND SHE’S ALWAYS FELT OVERWEIGHT

WELL LITTLE GIRL FOURTEEN I WISH THAT YOU COULD SEE
THAT BEAUTY IS WITHIN YOUR HEART
AND YOU WERE MADE WITH SUCH CARE YOUR SKIN YOUR BODY AND YOUR HAIR
ARE PERFECT JUST THE WAY THEY ARE

THERE COULD NEVER BE A MORE BEAUTIFUL YOU
DON’T BUY THE LIES DISGUISES AND HOOPS THEY MAKE YOU JUMP THROUGH
YOU WERE MADE TO FILL A PURPOSE THAT ONLY YOU COULD DO
SO THERE COULD NEVER BE A MORE BEAUTIFUL YOU

LITTLE GIRL TWENTY-ONE THE THINGS THAT YOU’VE ALREADY DONE
ANYTHING TO GET AHEAD
AND YOU SAY YOU’VE GOT A MAN BUT HE’S GOT ANOTHER PLAN
ONLY WANTS WHAT YOU WILL DO INSTEAD

WELL LITTLE GIRL TWENTY-ONE YOU NEVER THOUGHT THAT THIS WOULD COME
YOU STARVE YOURSELF TO PLAY THE PART
BUT I CAN PROMISE YOU THERE’S A MAN WHOSE LOVE IS TRUE
AND HE’LL TREAT YOU LIKE THE JEWEL YOU ARE

SO TURN AROUND YOU’RE NOT TOO FAR
TO BACK AWAY BE WHO YOU ARE
TO CHANGE YOUR PATH GO ANOTHER WAY
IT’S NOT TOO LATE YOU CAN BE SAVED
IF YOU FEEL DEPRESSED WITH PAST REGRETS
THE SHAMEFUL NIGHTS HOPE TO FORGETS
CAN DISAPPEAR THEY CAN ALL BE WASHED AWAY
BY THE ONE WHO’S STRONG CAN RIGHT YOUR WRONGS
CAN RID YOUR FEARS DRY ALL YOUR TEARS
AND CHANGE THE WAY YOU LOOK AT THIS BIG WORLD
HE WILL TAKE YOUR DARK DISTORTED VIEW
AND WITH HIS LIGHT HE WILL SHOW YOU TRUTH
AND AGAIN YOU’LL SEE THROUGH THE EYES OF A LITTLE GIRL
