When I was 13, I sketched a picture of an eagle outlined in white ink on black paper. The tips of its wings and talons were tied down with heavy chains to posts in the ground.  As it tried to fly free, the ground cracked and swelled, but the eagle couldn’t get loose. At the bottom I etched a sorrowful remark, “Too Old to Stay the Same, Too Young to Fly Free.”

I wasn’t a Christian then and my memories are of frustration, anger, hatred, and confusion. Never was there any time darker than my teenage years. I found many ways to try and vent the resentment inside of me. Poetry I wrote was violent, and artwork I created expressed my inner struggles. I listened to depressing music and let my hair hang low in front of my face. If my parents wished something of me, I tried my best to disappoint them. I had no vision for my future and didn’t care if I lived to see it.

But then, years later, when I made the commitment to follow Jesus and let him rule my world, I was freed from the darkness and given new life.

I am excited to offer this site as a resource for you; something I never had when I was struggling through my teen years. (hmmm…maybe a contest later to guess my age!)

As for the eagle I drew, I missed the one truth that could have been my freedom—Jesus Christ!
